THE HIGHEST MAUSOLEUM IN THE WORLD DEDICATED TO PETER II PETROVIĆ NJEGOŠ

Petar II Petrović Njegoš (1813-1851) was a Montenegrin bishop and metropolitan, however, in addition to his secular and ecclesiastical role, he was also remembered as one of the greatest poets and philosophers in the field of Montenegrin literature.

His most famous work by far is ‘Gorski Vijenac’ – a poem that is considered a masterpiece of Slovenian literature, while it was originally known as a folk epic in the territory of the former Yugoslavia.

This monumental building was built in 1974 according to the design of the great Yugoslav architect and sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The mausoleum was built at an altitude of 1,660 m and extends along the entire Jezerski Vrh, one of the tops of the Lovcen mountain. The remains of Njegoš are located in the crypt, which is located under the room where Njegoš’s figure is placed.
The entrance to the crypt is located at the back of the mausoleum, and it is reached through corridors. In the crypt there is a marble sarcophagus with his remains made of fine white marble. After passing through the mausoleum, a narrow stone path leads to the ‘guvn’, which is a lookout point with a magnificent view of a large part of Montenegro. This viewpoint is also used for tourists to rest after the not-so-easy climb to the very top.
