The village of Njeguši
THE VILLAGE OF NJEGUŠI

Njeguši is located on the slopes of
mountain Lovćen, and above Kotor,
at an altitude of 900 meters, this
area is characterized by a special
climate – therefore, it is no wonder
that it is called an aerial spa.
“The village of Njeguši offers the most
beautiful picture: a large circular plain in
the middle of the mountain, numerous and
rather large houses surround the foot of the
mountain and rise like an amphitheater,
leaving pleasant impression…” This is how Njeguši was described by the
Frenchman Viall de Somier in 1810, who was
on a journey through Montenegro.
In the village of Erakovići, the house where Njegoš was born in 1813 could be found.
What particularly attracts attention in Njeguši are the numerous churches – so today there are as many as 15 of them. Njeguš prosciutto, cheese, honey… are some of the traditional Montenegrin products originating from this area.
Njeguški cheese e.g. in the 17th century it was included in the German anthology of world cheeses.
TasteAtlas, the world food atlas, published a list of the 50 best cheeses, so Njeguški cheese secured second place.
