Cetinje the Old Royal Capital Montenegro

CETINJE THE OLD ROYAL CAPITAL MONTENEGRO

The founder of Cetinje is Ivan Crnojević, who built a palace and a monastery in the plain below the famous Montenegrin mountain Lovćen. According to written information, until the end of the 17th century, the river Cetina flowed through the plain, and that part of the city was called Cetinjsko Polje, named after the river. The main landmark of the city is the Cetinje Monastery. It used to be the seat of Montenegrin bishops. It was built in 1483. The right hand of John the Baptist is kept here, as well as a fragment of the Holy Cross and the relics of Saint Peter of Cetinje.
Nowadays, Cetinje is the historical and cultural center of Montenegro. Many museums are located here, as well as historical monuments. The oldest place of interest is the Wallachian Church, built in 1405.

An important historical monument is the palace of King Nicholas – now converted into a museum with thousands of works of archaeological, historical, and ethnographic importance along with a collection of awards, weapons, military clothing, flags, and paintings.
In 1878, for the first time in its history, Montenegro gained independence at the Berlin Congress and established diplomatic relations with European countries. Thus, 12 embassies, 12 embassies, and 12 embassies were built in Cetinje. It is enough just to walk along the Corse and enjoy the beauty of the old embassies, which still look as beautiful today as they did then. Today, there are 10 embassies, but the old name, the buildings of 12 embassies, still applies to them. These are the Austro-Hungarian embassy, Belgian consulate, English, French, Italian embassy, Bulgarian and German embassies, Russian, Serbian, and Turkish embassies. One of the most beautiful embassies is the Russian embassy, which has been in Cetinje since 1900. In the past, there was a women’s high school and a state teachers’ school in this embassy. Museums, archives, galleries, and art academies have made Cetinje the most attractive place in Montenegro.
